Why
The idea was formed during a trip around Myanmar, where we noticed the majority of fellow travellers in the over-cramped departure halls had grey hair and were of a certain age. Furthermore we discovered various popular gap year locations around the world were becoming more and more populated with people of our age. Pre Covid we were all very inquisitive of where anyone had travelled and were keen to learn of their experiences, so we decided to publish our own.

What
We set out to create an 'at-a-glance' website to enable readers to absorb the basic details of our travel experiences in a quick and easy format.
To extend the reader experience we shall be posting blogs which will be shared on social media providing the more colourful and descriptive moments of certain trips including those entertaining or horrifying moments that stay with us forever! We will encourage readers to share experience and comments on the blogs and Social Media posts.

Our aim
We hope everyone will find this a useful and entertaining website, and that collectively we all shall form a unique group of ethical travellers, conveying interest, friendship and respect to our worldwide hosts, so many of whom face increasingly huge challenges in their daily lives.

Where we were able to attend a Catholic Mass

The meaning of
Silver Haired Gappies has been hugely moved to join locals the world over to attend Mass, to sit with them to pray beside them. Humbling moments include watching locals in Borneo being encouraged to give to a worldwide charity to support those left fortunate. More than once we have left a church to find armed guards (Egypt, Turkey and New York!) standing guard with automatic rifles. Sadly, once Silver Haired Gappies decided to stay away from the Church to avoid their presence and skin colour unnecessarily antagonising the locals (Zimbabwe). Generally we found it more reliable to identify the Mass times on the internet rather than rely on Hotel Receptionist who themselves might not be Catholic and hence unaware of Mass times. A search for the Underground Church in Beijing rendered our computer unusable on the internet for the remainder of our trip in that country, which was unfortunate as it was our first stop!

Independent versus Group Travel
Independent travel has always been a preferred and traditional method of travel for Silver Haired Gappies. Within this section of the website you will find candid hotel reviews and tried & tested restaurant recommendations. All hotels and restaurants have been checked to ensure they are still operating (post Covid) with many ranked highly on TripAdvisor. Silver Haired Gappies highly recommends using the latest edition of the Dorling Kindersley Guide to expertly guide you through the historic cobbled streets of ancient towns and introduce you to unique shops, museums, and galleries off the beaten path.
Silver Haired Gappies' initial encounter with Group Tours was during their travels to China and Rajastan, which proved to be exceedingly positive experiences. More recently, Silver Haired Gappies have explored small cruise companies throughout Europe, enjoying the luxury of local guides to guide them around historic sites . From the comfort and ease of a boat (hence unpacking once) these tours cover a considerable amount of ground, but realistically only offer a brief glimpse into a destination, prompting travellers to contemplate a more extensive independent visit in the future.
